IN SEPTEMBER 2004,I had the pleasure of appearing at the Sprung Festival in Albany, Western Australia. Run by Megan Anderson, this is a small but wonderfully warm festival which sees the creative community of Albany joining with a few lucky invitees like myself and Rob Hirst (Midnight Oil)
in a weekend of literary and music events.

My duties included a reading of my own work, for which I chose an unpublished short story:
A CASE OF CONSTRUCTION (you can find it here); a 50-minute performance
by me of a collection of my poems, novel readings, snippets from my non fiction works et al;
and a panel discussion with poet Phil Salom and Rob Hirst about writing across different media.

Rob ran a terrific songwriting workshop in which he imparted some of the knowledge he's acquired after thirty years in the trenches of rock and roll. The highlight of the festival though was undoubtedly the poetry pub crawl. This took place over Saturday evening. We wound our way through the streets of Albany led by Lachie McDonald and his boot on a fishing rod, and stopped at various establishments to hear the works of mainly local poets. The standard was so high I felt like an imposter.

The following weekend The Suburbs did two pub gigs – at The Civic and Leopold Hotels in Perth.
The band rocked through an expanded list of material that included additions to the recent sets
like UK EUCHRED, SIDEWALK SURFIN and BIG BAD SEXUAL DRIVE. We also performed a
"new" song, OLD GUITARS. Written by me with Greg Macainsh (Skyhooks) and Martin Cilia
some years ago, this is a real favourite of mine about the death of the spirit of rock'n'roll.
I have plans to record it and a number of other new tracks in the near future.

The pictures here and on the front page were taken by freelance photographer Simone de Waal,
and I'd like to thank her for them.

The 1978 album FREE KICKS has been fabulously remastered by Martin Cilia and is now available on CD and we have pressed up some more copies of SURPLUS & DEARTH which had previously sold out. There are only a handful of copies of SUBURBS IN THE 70s left so if you want one of these double CDs don't delay your ORDER.

Remember, it's better to be wrong than predictable
